Attractions in the vicinity

Nettuno is a seaside town in Lazio, on the Tyrrhenian coast, the summer residence of many Roman emperors, about 50 km south of Rome.

The beach, wide and sandy, has several bathing establishments, but also offers ample free beach spaces.

Do not underestimate the green pine forest in the Campana area that extends  to the north and the Foglino wood to the east of  Neptune.

The temperature is always pleasant both in summer and in winter.
In summer the air is always breezy and in winter it is never too cold. The rains are scarce.

We are in an ideal position for those wishing to visit other famous tourist destinations in Lazio such as:

»Rome at 50 Km.

»The Castelli Romani with the lakes of Castel Gandolfo and Nemi 40 km away.

»The National Park and Circeo Promontory at 50 Km.

Torre Astura (1).jpg

Torre Astura

In medieval times, at the mouth of the Astura river, 5 kilometers south of Nettuno, the town was inhabited and the site of an ancient Roman port. The remains of a 15.00 square meter fish pond emerged from the surface of the sea. On the remains of the fish pond, in 1193, the Frangipane, lords of the place, to defend Astura from the Saracens, built the tower, 30 X 15 meters wide, smaller than the current one. Pliny describes Astura as an island and the news is confirmed by the remains of a bridge that connected the island to the mainland. The Putingerian table recalls Astura as a station on the Via Appia. Cicero, who owned one of his villas there, describes the place as follows: “Astura locus quidam amoenus, in mari ipso, qui ab Antio et circejs aspici possit“. The Romans had built a port and an imperial palace of which the ruins remain. Augustus, Tiberius and Caligula probably stayed there.

Fort Sangallo

Forte Sangallo was built between 1501 and 1503 by Antonio da Sangallo on a project by Giuliano Giamberti, at the behest of Cesare Borgia, known as Valentino. In the internal trabeations some glimpse the hand of Bramante.
The historian Diego Angeli attributes the authorship to the military architect Baccio Pontelli. The fortress defended Neptune, at the time considered the "granary of Lazio", from attacks by sea. It was part of a well-articulated defensive system, which united the coastal towers, from the fortress of Ostia to Tor San Lorenzo, Torre d'Anzio to Torre Astura and so on. The fortress dominates the sea on a quadrangular structure of 320 square meters and is equipped with four perfectly squared bulwarks. The walls are 5 meters thick. The height varies from 18 to 25 meters.

Tourist port

Features that evoke the past ed  infrastructures that instead refer to the future.

A mix of suggestions that, splendidly married, now chase classical myths, witnessed by the old medieval citadel, now the modernity of part of the city.

These are the main attractions that over the years have promoted Neptune as an important tourist and commercial center on the Lazio coast.
